The Children Act 1989 defines Parental Responsibility as all the rights, duties, powers, responsibilities and authority which, by law, a parent of a child has in relation to the child and his property.

This includes for example:-

  • Providing a home for the child
  • Seeing and living with the child
  • Protecting and maintaining the child
  • Discipline the child and choosing their education
  • Agreeing to medical treatment
  • Appointing a guardian
